Shamrocks regrouped for their second premiership clash to convincing defeat their South Coast opposition Shoalhaven at Ocean Park 43 – 0. Following their dour encounter against last years premiers Camden in week one of the competition the new look Shammies side tasted success through the efforts of their new young recruits. Like a lot of clubs this year Shammies are in a rebuilding phase for 2014 with lots of new faces pulling on the myrtle green & white first grade jersey for the first time following the retirement, major injuries and departure of numerous key players from the past couple of years.
The Shamrocks came out of the blocks for this game with lots of enthusiasm and flare. The new look Shammies which is predominately made up of young colts earning their stripes from last years grand final winning U20’s team ensured that match referee and long time whistle stalwart Jim Scandanas was a very tired official come the conclusion of the 80 minutes of play following a free flowing running rugby game which saw numerous broken field raids by the Shammies outside backs.
Following an opening 10 minutes of forward pack tussles the phone number library Shammies backline showed early signs of what was to come for the next 70 minutes when winger Jamie Pigram scored in the northern left hand corner following a raid by young Australian Touch football rep and fullback Luke Tonegato. The pursuing 10 minutes of play saw Shammies with a glut of possession with numerous broken field raids applied by outside centre and speedster Reece Peters from deep inside Shammies red zone only to see drop ball spoil the start of the days exciting running rugby.
Shoalies countered Shammies efforts but were guilty of the same drop ball disease at critical times. Late in the first half one of these blemishes was converted into gold by Shammies when fullback Tonegato secured a poor Shoalies clearing kick to scoot from half way down the right sideline to link with halfback Andrew Parker to put young 18 year flanker Iszack Lunney under the post for his 1st grade debut try. Shamrocks speedster Peters continued to razzle dazzle the opposition just before half time and at numerous times throughout the second half to collect three memorable tries.
Best on the day was a kick & chase at the 70 minute mark which saw Peters kick and regather on three occassions from well inside his half to out sprint his opposition to give his team an unassailable lead of 36 nil. With 10 minutes of play remaining Peters was successful with another chip kick in Shoalies half to see Tonegato pounce on the loose ball and send inside centre Mick Waters for a converted try under the posts close on full time. Best on field for Shamrocks were their young colts forwards locks Kyle Heycott and Jordan Decelis and flanker Iszack Lunney ably supported by young backs Luke Tonegato and Reece Peters.
