How important is fact-checking

Post by Maksudasm »

Pong pizzeria and opened fire indiscriminately. There were no killed or wounded, the shooter was arrested. The reason for such actions was "pizzagate" - a conspiracy theory according to which former US presidential candidate Hillary Clinton is connected to a pedophile society and the owner of the Comet Ping Pong chain. Welch agreed to lay down his arms only after he personally made sure that there were no illegally detained children in the pizzeria.

The above conspiracy theory arose during the 2016 election campaign after Wikileaks published correspondence from Hillary Clinton's campaign headquarters. Users believed that certain phrases in the messages were code words and related to pedophilia. Of course, there was no objective confirmation of this version, but this information went to the masses and was distributed on the web resources 4chan and Reddit.

Fact checking

A British doctor's post has sparked a measles outbreak.

In 1998, the famous medical loan database journal Lancet published the results of research by British doctor Andrew Wakefield. He came to the conclusion that the measles, mumps and rubella vaccines used in his country could lead to the development of autism. The publication resulted in a sharp increase in the number of vaccination refusals and the number of people sick with measles. If in 1998 the share of vaccinated citizens was 95% of the population, then by 2008 it had decreased to 80%. The author of the publication himself became a recognizable personality who was often invited to television.

However, an investigation conducted by the editors of The BMJ magazine revealed some curious facts. Back in 1996, Andrew Wakefield registered an express test designed to detect signs of measles in the body. The new product needed a market, an audience willing to buy it. Carmel Healthcare was founded to promote the drug. Wakefield deliberately spread false information about the consequences of vaccination in order to provoke a surge in demand for the express test he had developed. According to preliminary estimates, sales could bring in up to 28 million euros.

So Wakefield's move not only created demand for his drug, it also led to a spike in measles cases in the UK. Not exactly responsible marketing.
