If the company's organizational structure does not include a vice president of information technology position, the CIO position may be the top of the career ladder. In a situation where the company's main activity is not related to IT, this manager will most likely not have the opportunity to become a CEO.

However, if the nature of the work allows participation in various projects not directly related to information technology, then there is potential for horizontal development. For example, you can collaborate with the marketing department to create programs that automate the collection and analysis of feedback.

If the company's main activity is practically not related to information technology, and the functions of the IT department are limited to installing office programs, setting up printers and providing user support, then the head of this department may face the problem of burnout.

The CIO is responsible for maintaining the company's current IT processes and internal automation, while the CDTO works to advance new IT projects, ecosystems, and integrations while maintaining business continuity. The CIO is primarily focused on meeting the needs of internal customers, such as executives and end users. The CDTO focuses on serving external customers, such as partners and commercial customers.

How will the CIO profession develop?
Currently, there is a constant and rapid growth in the volume of processed information, as well as an increase in the complexity of information systems, which makes the role of the CIO in the organization increasingly important. At the same time, the importance of the CIO will continue to grow in the next 5-10 years.

However, when considering the prospects for further development, some questions arise. There is a point of view according to which, with the development of complex information solutions (such as ERP and business process management systems), as well as with the growth of outsourcing and the increasing popularity of cloud computing, IT competencies will increasingly be concentrated in specialized external IT companies.

This may lead to a decrease in the importance of the IT function within the organization. This function will be comparable to utilities (resources consumed: electricity, water, etc.).

Consequently, the role of the CIO will undergo a transformation. This specialist will be less and less involved in infrastructure issues and management of internal IT teams. The CIO will focus on organizing information flows and monitoring external service companies.

What is the average tenure of a CIO?
Data analysis shows that the average tenure of a CIO is less than four years. However, there are cases where the contract stipulates a two-year term. Typically, this is due to the need to lead the organization through digital transformation and overcome the challenges that arise.

In such a situation, the CIO must be prepared to act quickly when difficulties arise, while trying to adhere to a sound transition strategy.
